With a 150-year-old mansion at its centre, and 20 luxuriant villas nestled within its 58 acres, there are few more indulgent places to stay in the Cultural Triangle. The sleek and striking Ullagalla Villas are what make this place so incredible. The villas are a whopping 850 sq ft with glass walled panoramic views, wicker chairs, king size beds draped in white, and a door leading out to a private decked area, some with private plunge pools. They feel spacious, spoiling and secluded as they are spread out across the estate. The Nikawewa Villa is ideal for a family or group due to having two bedrooms surrounding a communal dining area. Here the 180-degree glass wall offers the most incredible views of the 20 acres of paddy fields. Meals at Ullagalla are flexible, with an all day breakfast, 24-hour room service, and both Sri Lankan and international menus at lunch and dinner. If you don’t fancy heading out to the ancient cities you can relax in your private pool, spot birds with the resident naturalist, kayak on the scenic reservoir and even ride through the estate on horseback. Ullagalla really is an incredible treat and easily the best in the area.
