Famous for its surf, this remote beach and village in the far east of the country has bags of laid-back charm and a number of interesting sights nearby. Home to an eclectic mix of Tamils, Muslims, Sinhalese and expat Europeans, Arugam Bay first attracted visitors who were keen to check out the surf. Many surfers believe Arugam Bay to have some of the best waves throughout the whole of Asia, quite the statement!
More recently, it has become popular even for non-surfers who are seeking its chilled-out, relaxed vibes. There are no big hotel developments or high-end properties in this area, but if you’re prepared to forego the five-star comforts, there are some wonderfully quirky boutique options out of town in Pottuvil and near Whisky Point.
