Galle Fort is a spellbinding mixture of Dutch, Portuguese and British history. It oozes colonial charm with an eclectic range of low rise European architecture, tucked down a lace of narrow lanes and alleyways. These include the thick walled ramparts that withstood the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

Our compelling half-day guided walking tour of Galle Fort explores the history of this magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site as a merchant trading spot right up to the present day, as a hip city full of boutique shops and trendy cafes, through the eyes of a local man with hilarious and fascinating anecdotes and facts.

The tour covers the bloody battle in 1640, how the fort was originally created, and the details of when Galle Fort was ceded to the British.  Galle Fort is a glorious and well-preserved colonial townscape that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This tour will take you behind its coral walls to meet original merchant families so that you can learn about what life was really like in the colonial periods, and what life is like today. The fort today offers a plethora of cafes, restaurants, vintage shops, chic boutiques and art galleries. These have taken the place of 17th and 18th century vendors who would have traded in cinnamon, lace and elephants. Please note this tour may be with a small group and is subject to availability at the time of booking.
